Late Egyptian FlashCards
Summary of Late Egyptian constructions
This small text is a simple list of LE verb form I've written for the
AEL list, in the hope that it would be useful for people working on
the Merenptah stela. It certainly doesn't replace a grammar ; I have often ommitted
a number of specific cases.
I suggest strongly
for those who want to work on this stela to get a grammar of Late Egyptian.
Currently, there are two grammars for beginners available :
-
F. Neveu, La langue des Ramsès, grammaire du néo-égyptien, ed. Khéops, Paris
-
F. Junge Late Egyptian grammar, Griffith Institute (there is also a german edition).
General remark on Late Egyptian
The tendency of LE is to reduce the number of verb forms, and to replace
them with paraphrastic constructs.
Another tendency of LE is that it tends to explicitely indicate subordinate sentences.
